Discovering stories of patriotism to help do a good job on patriotic education
As the ninth en masse repatriation, the remains of 88 martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) returned home yesterday by air from South Korea, and were greeted with a solemn welcome home ceremony held by the state. Two students from Hong Kong's Pui Kiu Middle School were there to welcome home the heroes on behalf of their school. In an interview with Ta Kung Pao, they said: "this is the best patriotic education lesson. We must carry on the martyrs' spirits to take the responsibility of serving our country upon ourselves." As a matter of fact, in Hong Kong and around us, there is no lack of heroic deeds of Hong Kong people loving the Motherland, which must be discovered, sorted and archived as quickly as possible. For, these are the most realistic and lively material for national education.
Seven decades or so ago, in order to protect our homes and defend our country, hundreds of thousands of the PVA soldiers gallantly and spiritedly crossed the Yalu River. More than 60 Pui Kiu students returned to serve the Motherland. Over 20 of them joined the army and made their way to the front and the youngest among them was only 15 years old. With the dare-to-die courage, they fought bravely in different posts. Some of them acted as automobile soldiers, some became political teachers, and still some worked around Peng Dehuai, the PVA's Commander in Chief.
As time goes by , the majority of the veteran soldiers have already passed away and those who are still alive today are of senile age. Because they did not want their names to be known, plus the political suppression under the British colonial rule in Hong Kong, the heroic deeds of Pui Kui students joining the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea had almost fallen into oblivion. Until two years ago when Ta Kung Pao interviewed some veteran Pui Kiu soldiers to shake the dust off this historical episode and arouse attention from various sectors. Our country never forgets heroes who sacrificed themselves for the Motherland. Hence this time some Pui Kiu students were invited to participate in the ceremony to welcome home the remains of the PVA martyrs.
It is Pui Kui's honour to have its students participating in the ceremony, which is also an honour for Hong Kong. Pui Kiu Middle School authorities attaches great importance to this and hopes to find and sort out more relevant information for educating the next generation students so that the spirit of patriotism could be passed down from generation to generation. The Education Bureau (EB) makes much of relevant reports and hopes to turn them into material for national education. Veteran Pui Kui soldiers earnestly expect the Hong Kong youths of today could carry on the patriotic tradition of their predecessors and devote themselves to the Motherland's reconstruction endeavour, contributing their talents and skills to meet the demands of our country and realising their own self-worth in the due process.
Pui Kui students returning home to fight in the war is just the tip of the iceberg of Hong Kong people's contribution to the Motherland. Hong Kong compatriots have never been absent in the process of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Connected by blood, Hong Kong compatriots always stand together with the Motherland through thick and thin . When Hong Kong was invaded and occupied by Japanese troops in 1941, the then British Hong Kong government surrendered under humiliation. But the Dongjiang Column led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) remained active in various places in Hong Kong and Kowloon, composing many heroic and moving stories.
Similarly little known is that there once was a Ta Teh Institute in Hong Kong. It was set up in 1946 with Cai Tingkai, a patriot, lent his house named Fong Yuen in Tuen Mun as the schoolhouse. Due to the shaky and unstable political situation at that time, the CPC transferred groups of intellectuals from war-torn regions to comparatively peaceful Hong Kong. These refugees were all prominent personages of the time including professors, writers, journalists and theoreticians. By the year of 1949, seeing that a New China was about to be founded, the then British Hong Kong Government turned from tolerance to suppression, giving an order to close down the Ta Teh Institute. Nowadays, a middle school is located in the place. Its teachers and students pass by the red-brick building every day, but may not know the fact that this building known as the "Red Mansion" once was an important talent-training place for the CPC, leaving behind it a lot of patriotic stories.
When the SAR Government started to introduce in national education years ago, some schools complained that there was neither good teaching material nor substance, and hoped the EB could provide. In fact, Hong Kong lacks no such material and substance. The problem lies in that we pass by them without realising it, so much so that they have sunk into oblivion with time going by. Because of this the EB and relevant departments should act right away to do a good job on recording oral history and information collection while the persons concerned are still alive. Some architectures of historical values should also be renovated and conserved.
Paying homage to Lu Xun, Yu Dafu said: "Unfortunate is a nation without heroes. Beyond redemption is a nation which has heroes but does not know how to respect and cherish them." Hong Kong's patriotic heroes emerge one after another, who are worthy of our respect and cherishment. In order to well narrate the China story, it is before anything else to well tell patriotic stories including those patriotic stories arising from the ordinary people around us.
